Chapter 5 Ample Access

Providing an ample access to books is an essential component in developing a culture of readers. It puts everyone on an even playing field.  In the book, the author talks about a bathtub of books. They had a donated tub full of books that the students could access at any time. This allowed the students a fun different way to access books.

Reading Emergencies
One teacher had her students always keep a book on their desk for a reading emergency. These were those times where they had some spare time they could read. Her students were allowed to read anytime when they had a little time.. even in line.

Little Free Libraries
I have seen these pop up all over town. These are libraries that anyone can drop off or take a book. What a great idea. This allows anyone to have access to books at any time. I've often wondered what it'd be like to have one of those in the hallway for kids and teachers to use.

Here are some ideas I found to promote ample access to books

What is an idea you have to promote access to books that would encourage your students to check out more?

  1. We do a pumpkin contest every year based on a book. The kids love it and I often have students wanting to check out a book like the pumpkin they have seen. It is a great way to get the word out about different books and often I learn about new books we don't have. It is a fun experience for all involved.
