Chapter 4 Student Choice

We love the ability to have a choice. How often do we choose things? Daily, hourly, by the minute? Life is full of choices. We need to embrace our student’s right to choose what book they want. We need to give up the control and let the students choose the books that spark their love for the book. This combined with access to reading material, we begin to create readers.  We need to be active readers and leaders in our students lives.
If anything.. You can rap about your ability to “pick” out a good book.

What roadblocks do you feel you have in helping students choose books?

  1. I feel that the dot colors can be a hinderance. I love that it helps students find books that are on their level, but sometimes I feel it is ok to go above or below their level. Especially if they are excited about the book they are choosing. That is the major road block I fight on a daily basis.

  2. At the high school we are working on (it's in pilot form right now) interest grouping kids for DIRT days. Once we had the group established, we are currently looking for quick reads for the kids. The ideas is that they will read on Tuesday and discuss the passage on Thursday with others that are interested in the same topic. I'll let you know how it goes. :)
